Consultancy

A consultant is a professional individual who dispenses advice and guidance to people and companies. Consultancy is currently a highly profitable area of business and there are numerous firms that specialise in consultancy specific to a variety of certain fields such as computing, finance and management. Many companies or businesses that are planning to improve their performance will often hire a consultant from a third party company who will be able to analyse the business’s methods and techniques and then offer advice on how they can improve their performance.

It is fairly unusual for a company, particularly a high profile company to hire the services of an independent consultant. They are more likely to seek the services of an established consultancy firm that will employ a variety of different consultants suited to various tasks. Some consultancy firms, particularly those that have dealt with particularly high profile clients will be very well known and their services are often sought after by many businesses who wish to turn their fortunes around.

There has been a great deal of criticism levelled at the consultancy industry with many detractors questioning the value of what consultants actually do. Many people argue that consultancy firms can in fact to very little to aid an ailing business, but mask their lack of effectiveness behind overuse of jargon and confusing technical terms.  However, despite these criticisms there have been numerous companies that have enlisted the services of consultancy firms and as a result have profited greatly.
