Balmoral Castle is one such place, which was built in 1390 by Sir William Drummond. It was purchased as a Royal Residence in 1852 but the English crown was forced to purchase it again when Edward VIII abdicated, as he had inherited the deeds as a personal property and took them with him when he left the throne. Its grounds themselves are a haven for a large variety of wildlife, adding to the rich conservational heritage of the rest of Aberdeenshire .
